| The Bare Necessities A Morning in the Life of … a Work-at-Home Mom by Melissa Bogdany I sit down at my computer to get a good head start on my day’s work when my potty-training 2-year-old pulls off her diaper and says she needs to take a bath. So I stop what I’m doing, since she’s running around on the carpet without a diaper on, and say, “Let’s take a bath in a little while,” hoping to throw on a diaper and divert her attention (okay, bribe her) with a snack and “Dora the Explorer.” She starts to cry. I say, “Okay, you can take a bath,” because, of course, I felt sad seeing her cry. We start the water. She gets in. I turn my head, and she tells me how she has done something that she shouldn’t be doing in the bathtub—something that apparently was confusing to her in my potty training explanations. So, out of the tub she goes. I wash and dry her, and put a new diaper on her.
Now, she’s advancing in her potty training, and has learned to take off her diaper (“Aubry’s underpants”) when she has to go to the bathroom. So next thing I know, off the diaper goes, and before I can react, she … yep, you guessed it. On the dollhouse and the floor. So, still not getting my work done, I go for the cleaning supplies, clean up the mess, get her diaper back on, and sit down at my computer as she begins to play. Okay, I think, now I’m ready to begin. She, nearly immediately, runs over to me in my home office to give me a hug. Aw, they’re so sweet. I think, Let me take a break (from what, I don’t know, because I haven’t been working for more than about 30 seconds) and enjoy a moment with my (last) baby. How can you get upset with such a cute, innocent little girl giving her mommy a hug? There’s nothing sweeter on this earth. I look down at her, enjoying the moment before getting back to work, only to notice … a bare bottom. When I have mornings like this, and I am able to keep the proper perspective, I realize that these are such special moments—even the messy ones—and we should cherish every minute (well, most of them, anyway) with our children, whom we are so blessed to have been given. I’d like to write more, but I have a diaper to find … Melissa Bogdany, married to Tim, works at home as a freelance editor and writer while caring for their two children, Aubry, 2, and Emily, 8. They live in Chuluota, Florida, and are considering buying stock in diaper companies. Share Your Thoughts... Be the first to comment on this article! |
