| Just for Us Dads We’re Dads; We Know What to Do by Chris Maxwell As fathers, we know best. Right? I mean, we just know what is right. At least, we think we do. And we work to force others to agree, thinking we know best. Especially our children. We want them to know that we know that we know. Right? Well, it might be right meaning it is true. It IS how we often behave. But it isn’t “right” in the sense of being what is best. The best dads are those who aren’t always the “know-it-alls.” The very best dads are those who ask questions, listen well, learn through their entire lives, and seek to find ways of ENJOYING and ENDURING. So, what can help you become that dad? Well, here is one idea. As special days come, make sure they stay special. As holidays come, remember their meanings. If nothing spectacular is happening, choose to make minor events fun and filled with joy. Read and sing and walk and learn. Listen to your children and let them teach you a few things about yourself, your marriage and your attitude (even though they have no idea they’re teaching you!). Find a few other guys you can speak to with honesty, agreeing that none of you will ever tell anyone else what has been said. Trust each other, become vulnerable, seek community and pursue dreams. Let them hold you accountable. Let them keep you from giving up when life is tough. Let them stare you in the face and remind you that you, after all, just don’t know it all.
Chris Maxwell is an author, a speaker, director of Spiritual Life and a dad of three.
Questions to Ponder: • Why do dads often think they know so much? • Do our deep insecurities cause us to wear masks of pride and ego, seeking to convince ourselves that we’re something we’re not? • Why? • What have you done in the past to help that? • What can you do in the future? • How does this affect your role as a dad? • What are your children learning from you?
