| I Hate to Get Sentimental … but I Really Love My Dad by Georgia Meredith Grady As the holidays approach, I find myself missing my family more and more. While being away at college certainly has its perks (like deciding two o’clock in the morning is a perfectly acceptable bedtime), I realize how much I want to go home when Wal-Mart starts putting out the Christmas decorations. I could write essays on each family member, but today’s is solely focused on my father. He’s fantastic. Here’s why: - My dad is giving, not withholding. Growing up, he never did buy me that pet dolphin. However, he did express his affection through words, deeds, and sometimes ice cream outings. Even now, it’s evident he’s a generous person – he’s helping put me through college!
- My dad is encouraging, not overly critical. While I may not be able to do anything I set my mind to (the soccer superstar career probably won’t happen), I know that He is supportive of God’s plan for my life, however it unfolds.
- My dad is present, not absent. Even though I live a state away now, my dad is still actively involved in my life. With the invention of Facebook, it is nearly impossible for him to lose track of me. It’s kind of embarrassing, actually.
- My dad is not forgetful. I am lucky to have never experienced the pain of a missed birthday or school play (except for that one time he was in Africa).
- My dad loves my mom and shows it. When you’re an eleven-year-old and you walk in on your parents kissing in the kitchen, it’s pretty disgusting. Even now, while it’s still pretty gross, it’s also reassuring. The way he has respected, cared for, and preferred her has demonstrated to me that males can be trusted.
- My dad taught me that a woman is just as valuable as a man. Being a young woman in ministry would be completely overwhelming were it not for the fact that my dad raised me to believe women are not second-class members of society or the church. He even wrote a few books about the idea. I highly recommend them (although I’m probably a bit biased).
- My dad is human. I don’t want to paint a picture of J. Lee Grady and title it “the perfect father.” My dad has failed hugely on numerous occasions. The difference between him and a lot of other males is that he can admit it when he does.
- My daddy wants me to come home for the holidays. And I’m coming!
