| Cookies on a Whim A Tip for Busy Moms by Janel Piersma I grew up in a household where dessert was a special treat, not an everyday occurrence. However, I married a man who comes from a family that loves dessert in a big way. For example, at Thanksgiving with his family, the concern is not “Will there be enough turkey?” but “Will there be enough dessert?” Seriously, they descend on the dessert table like vultures … and okay, I confess that I like to join them!
So, over the years, I’ve learned to add dessert to my grocery list — usually ice cream, brownie mix or cookie ingredients. Store-bought cookie dough or cookies are fine in a pinch, but I LOVE a freshly baked homemade cookie. However, now that we’ve added another child to our family, it isn’t quite as easy to make homemade cookies with all the preparation, baking and cleanup that is required. Inspired by a cookie dough-making craft at MOPS, I now have a solution that works for our family! I make a large batch of cookie dough specifically to freeze for later use. My 3-year-old likes to help me make the dough and roll it into balls. We then put the individual balls onto paper plates, seal the plates up in a freezer bag and place them in the freezer until the balls are frozen solid. Then to save space, I consolidate the balls into one large freezer bag and remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. (A straw works great to suck out the excess air.) When we want some cookies, I just take out as many balls of frozen dough as we need and bake them for a couple minutes more than the recipe calls for. It works great for us all — my family gets to enjoy freshly baked cookies on a whim, and I only have cookie sheets to clean! Janel Piersma lives with her husband, Brett, and their two daughters, Ella (age 3) and Lucie (2 months), in Solvang, California. Janel serves in her MOPS group at Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church. What time-saving ideas do you have for busy moms of preschoolers? Share Your Thoughts...
