| Sleepless, Snotty and Snuggled by Shelby Rawson As I sit at my computer, I can hear my son crying as he wakes from his nap. I am exhausted, and I don’t want to go get him. Looking back on the last two days, there are not many bright spots in my moments as a mommy. At least none that come to mind! In the middle of snot-smeared shoulders and nights filled with bitty boy blues, my attitude has been about as crusty as my shirt sleeve. Calgon, take me away!
Then again, there have been those early-morning wakings with my little man attempting to get me out of bed with a slimy, yet sweet, “Mmmmmm-aahhh!” Right on the kisser. I may not be much of a bright spot lately, but he is. Thank God for those moments. And, as exhausted, uninspired and non-functioning as I may seem to be, it never fails to amaze me that in my failings, God can bring delight in the form of a diaper-donned cotton-top with a wily grin. He is my snuggle-monkey, my comic relief and the reason I’m not sleeping at night. I never knew such duality could take place within me. When 12:30 rolls around and I hear him wailing my name, my first thought is, Go back to sleep, you little stinker. Then I climb the stairs, get one look at him in his crib as he mumbles, “Humme peez, Mommy” with arms outstretched, and I want my little snuggle-monkey against my chest. My heart is not divided. Nope, not my heart – merely my mood. My humanness overtakes me in moments throughout the week. And then I am overtaken by a face lit up at the sight of me as my second-born races toward me with all the speed a 22-month-old can muster. And I am once again spotted with snot, as I received a bear hug from my monkey. Now that’s love – with evidence! Shelby Rawson is a writer, co-author of Daddy, Do You Love Me? A Daughter’s Journey of Faith and Restoration, and the mother of two young children. Tell us about the "bright moments" your little one brings to your day. Share Your Thoughts...
